Accredited CSO
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Designs and applies energy efficient, forest conserving technologies in the peri-desert settlements. Promotes the use of energy efficient building technology in arid areas, especially traditional technology such as wind-catchers, adobe (mud-brick) architecture to eliminate the need for wood-beams. Conducts studies on sustainable traditional water conservation systems (Qanat), water_x000D_ harvesting systems, nomadism and development with respect to environmental_x000D_ protection systems and traditional rangeland improvement techniques.
Prepares reports on water use and conservation in the Middle-East, particularly related to the Jordan river basin. Promotes the use of renewable energy and sustainable tourism for the Eastern Mediterranean/Middle-East region. Undertakes electronic mail training courses for environmentalists and reviews development projects.
Promotes the establishment of tree plantations and participates in reforestation and market gardening activities. Organizes awareness events with the aim of controlling desertification and pollution. Combats the destruction of the savannah by collaborating with other organizations on the implementation of reforestation projects. Organizes awareness-raising campaigns and meetings on ways of combating desertification and preventing environmental pollution. Undertakes Convention sensitization campaigns in the northern zone of Mauritania. Encourages the community to have a sense of responsibility towards the use of natural resources.
Aims to assist grass-root communities, especially women by organising information and education sessions on the problem of desertification using cassettes, videos and radio emissions. Promotes the use of technologies which assist the protection and regeneration of natural resources. Encourages the use of successful cultural techniques to combat desertification.
Conducts research into land depletion, soil conservation measures and mitigating rural poverty
Conducts scientific research on the degradation of the steppe landscape due to over-grazing. Encourages the community in tree planting activities and upkeep. Holds environmental education sessions and activities to create awareness on global ecological problems
Develops partnerships between Northern and Southern countries aimed at exchanging experiences and strengthening collaboration. Organises seminars on environment and development issues and encourages the participation of civil society, public institutions, experts and enterprises. Promotes Italian engagement in the implementation of the Convention.
Organizes a course for teachers on environmental problems. Carries out surveys on environmental hazards in the region. Elaborates documents on alternative land use and combined treatment of solid waste to be distributed among decision makers and the local and national media.
Runs land conservation programmes in northern Senegal, including nurseries (with a capacity of 1,000,000 plants a year), community woodlots, small-scale_x000D_ irrigation, and introduction of fast growing trees.
