The seedling planting in schools amis to combat desertification and raise awareness among pupils about the benefits of trees. The target schools are those that have no fences and few trees, so seedlings will be planted along their perimeters to add greenery and provide a sense of security. The initiative is in collaboration with the Borgou Forestry Inspectorate and forestry officers. Involving future generations is key to preserving our ecosystem. The Day was marked by screening a flood-impact video at a local high school—sparking a climate-change discussion that led students to pledge reusable bowls and bottles for land restoration—and by running a “Sustainability Fresco” hidden-word game that rewarded the top team.

Teacher-trainer workshop on restoring land degraded by floods, fires and drought in the Ruzizi plain: educators and principals pledged to embed environmental education, launch “green schools” (each pupil plants two trees), track biodiversity change since 1960 with local leaders, and by July 2025 plant trees and build firebreaks to protect ecosystems and advance sustainable, peaceful development.

The BA Sustainable Development Studies, Youth Capacity Building, and African Relations Support Program, in collaboration with the Desert Research Center, organizes a workshop entitled “Towards Active Youth Action in Combating Desertification in Africa.” During multiple sessions, the workshop will address the issue of desertification on the African continent and ways to tackle it. It will also highlight the importance of biodiversity and how to preserve it, and will examine the uses of modern technology and geographic information systems in tackling the problem of desertification in Africa. Nearly one hundred African students studying at Egyptian universities and participating in the BA youth capacity building programs are expected to attend the workshop

The event brought together experts, officials and organizations to explore solutions for restoring degraded land and tackling drought and desertification. Presentations covered land-use planning, agroforestry, geospatial modelling and the role of date palms in land restoration. Speakers highlighted the link between healthy land, biodiversity, livelihoods and peace, calling for integrated action to unlock opportunities for sustainable development.

A 20-hectare area of degraded land in Sigcaweni, Lubombo region, is being successfully rehabilitated to protect local livelihoods and infrastructure. A 0.5 km-long donga threatening grazing lands, homesteads and public utilities has been stabilized through water diversion, slope reshaping, fencing and vetiver grass planting. Ongoing efforts include planting fruit and wild trees to enhance economic opportunities and ecosystem resilience. Restored grasslands will support livestock, particularly during dry seasons.

Webinar to introduce influential voices shaping Africa's sustainable future

The Knowledge for Great Green Wall Action (K4GGWA) Programme, led by CIFOR-ICRAF, FAO, and supported by the European Union, is organizing an event that will feature interactive presentations and inspiring video content from member countries of the Great Green Wall Initiative. Together, we will showcase the groundbreaking work of innovators and advocates who are actively regenerating landscapes and improving livelihoods across the Sahel and the Horn of Africa. The event will honor the K4GGWA Innovation Facility laureats and their successes that demonstrate how restoring land creates jobs, boosts food and water security, supports climate action and builds economic resilience. 

Activities included distributing fire-fighting equipment and fuel-efficient stoves, recognizing bushfire prevention efforts, launching a biodiversity training center, showcasing rainwater-harvesting techniques, planting 1,000 trees, and supporting cash-for-work programs. A high-level conference explored strategies for sustainable land management, concluding with an agreement to strengthen joint action on land restoration and biodiversity protection.

The Republic of Mozambique, the African Union and the UNCCD are organizing a webinar on "Accelerating African Solutions for Drought Resilience and Land Restoration” The event will explore Africa’s progress and persistent challenges in addressing drought and land degradation, reflecting on the efforts to contribute to the achievement of the African Union’s Agenda 2063. NamTip project is a German-Namibian partnership focused on sustainable land management, where work together to understand social-ecological tipping points related to desertification and woody plant encroachment, including their ecological and social drivers. The project explores management options to prevent or restore degraded ecosystems, with a strong emphasis on climate change and stakeholder-specific capacity development. Ahead of this year's Desertification and Drought Day, NamTip is organizing a Winter School in Namibia from June 16 to 20, 2025, with educational modules designed by NamTip scientists, aimed at students from Namibia’s universities who are studying conservation and agriculture.

An CREACC-NG event focused on raising awareness and promoting practical solution will include community engagement, knowledge-sharing and the planting of 50 climate-resilient trees to demonstrate local action in restoring degraded land.

In his first engagement as Sport4LandChampion, William Troost-Ekong will host a charity football in honor of this year's Desertification and Drought Day and its  theme “Restore the Land. Unlock the Opportunities.” The event will bring together athletes, fans and community members in a celebration of the power of sport to unite and drive meaningful change for the land. 

Drawing from recent drought events, experts from the Americas, Africa and Asia will share how their regions have been affected, the preparedness and response mechanisms deployed, the importance of involving local perspectives in drought response and management, and key lessons for future resilience. The day will be marked by nationwide awareness campaigns, school competitions, clean-up drives, tree plantings and the launch of the Greening Drylands Partnership pilot project. The events aim to promote land restoration, sustainable land management and drought resilience with strong emphasis on youth and community engagement.

The UNCCD Communities of Learning and Practice, together with Global Water Partnership, ELD Initiative and The Nature Conservancy, are launching a Case Study Competition: Investing in Drought Resilience to spotlight real-world solutions that reduce drought impacts, which currently cost US$307 billion annually. We’re seeking practical case studies showcasing strong economic or business cases and innovative financing mechanisms for sustainable land and drought management. Submit by 17 September. 

In Shinyanga, government officials, NGO staff, teachers and students undertook a one-kilometer awareness walk to spotlight the value of tree-planting in the region’s arid landscape. The event concluded with the planting of 100 saplings and presentations on the country’s UNCCD programmes.

A bold reforestation and youth education program uses the power of sport to combat desertification — a serious threat to health and agriculture. Running through the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, the program will:

• Plant 2028 trees in Togo each year
• Teach environmental stewardship through sport and play
• Inspire public action for the planet

The highlight is an annual race where 200 young Togolese plant trees with the UNCCD Sport4Land Champion for food security Naomi Akakpo. Year-round, workshops and sport-based sessions reinforce the message — restoring land, one game at a time.

Muyanja James, a Ugandan climate advocate, poet and youth coordinator who works with Youth Go Green (Uganda), HEY Campaign / The Ashley Lashley Foundation, International Diplomats, World Youth Parliament for Water, My Body is My Body Foundation and YOUNGO NDCS working group, composed called a poem "A Call to Restore: Unlocking Opportunities."

Oryem Sunday, an Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) Champion from Northern Uganda, supports communities in restoring degraded land through farmer-led tree regeneration. He promotes FMNR to improve soil fertility, boost livelihoods, and is marking the Day by leading community sensitization and distributing 8,000 Calliandra seedlings for bee forage and regreening.

A training for the members of Deaf In Action, a community-based organization founded by persons with special Abilities, on regenerating trees to boost the population of pollinators and protect biodiversity, while improving livelihoods and agricultural productivity. 

Bhutan, a UNCCD party since 2003, marked the Day at Lingmapong in Goshing gewog, where 80 officials, monks, teachers and farmers planted napier-grass hedgerows, while nationwide drives across all 19 Dzongkhags restored 7,472 acres of degraded farmland through terracing, contour hedgerows, stone bunds and other sustainable land-management practices, spotlighting community-led solutions to land degradation.

The national observance of Desertification and Drought Day, co-organized by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Boao Forum for Asia, and the People's Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, will feature a series of public outreach events in Yinchuan. Activities at the Ningxia Science and Technology Museum, Ningxia Museum, and Ningxia Library will include science lectures, youth workshops, and exhibitions on the Three-North Shelterbelt Program and desertification art, aiming to raise awareness and encourage youth engagement in land restoration.

At a high‑profile event held beside the Taklamakan Desert in Hotan, Xinjiang, more than 100 scientists, policymakers, business leaders and community representatives marked both the Desertification and Drought Day and the 30th anniversary of UNEP’s landmark award to China’s Cele research station. Gathering under the theme “Exploration of New Models for the Edge Control Project of the Taklimakan Desert,” speakers celebrated the recent closure of a 3,046‑km green sand‑blocking belt—hailed as a “scarf” around China’s largest mobile desert—while showcasing advances in engineering, biological and photovoltaic sand‑control techniques. Keynotes from leading Chinese desertification experts framed discussions on smart wind‑hazard diagnostics, saline‑water utilisation and eco‑photovoltaic solutions, with calls for continued global collaboration and innovation to consolidate and expand China’s pioneering “edge‑locking” achievements.

A field program Baidyabati Municipal City to help restore degraded land and flooded areas will feature tree planing planting, landscape survey and soil testing. A public campaign to engage students, citizens and volunteers is organized in partnership with Biswa Bondhu Society and the Baidyabati Biodiversity Management Committee.

Land for Life Award laureate Prof. Shyam Sunder Jyani and  Kavita Jyani, cofounders of Familial Forest, kick off a grassroots “Plastic-Free Kitchen” drive by swapping plastic tea strainers for metal/natural-fiber ones. The initiative targets household microplastic pollution, safeguards soil health and models simple daily actions for global plastic reduction.

First Asia-Pacific Happy Landing Festival, a vibrant and impactful event dedicated to connecting people with nature and promoting land and environmental restoration and conservation of vulnerable mangroves zone of Navi Mumbai and Mumbai - Maharashtra. 13 km-long walk rally traverse Palm Beach Road, Navi Mumbai and planting native mangrove species partnering with various government and private stakeholders at Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. First Asia-Pacific Happy Landing Festival also promote Sustainable Airlines Initiative. 

The Korea Forest Service of the ROK will hold a seminar that will bring together members of the National Assembly, representatives of drought-related organizations and experts. The participants will share policies and research on drought prevention and response. In addition, the ROK will also hold a Youth English contest to raise awareness of the UNCCD and global efforts to restore degraded lands and forests.

Organized in the lead-up to the 17th Session of the Conference of the Parties (UNCCD COP17) and in observance of the Desertification and Drought Day 2025, the forum will bring together young herders, young scholars and policymakers to co-create solutions and share best practices for sustainable land management. Taking place in Mandalgovi, Dundgovi Province, it will highlight the integration of traditional knowledge and scientific evidence, foster resilience against desertification and promote youth engagement in national land restoration efforts.

To mark the day, the Geography Society and IRC at Lahore College for Women University are hosting an international webinar featuring experts from the UK, Georgia, China, Argentina and Ghana. Aligned with this year’s global theme on land restoration, the event will highlight real-world success stories, climate-smart practices and data-driven models for sustainable land management across drylands.

The observance includes the release of a drought report, a webinar on drought and climate change, and a launch of a social media campaign highlighting the role of land restoration in building resilience and safeguarding nature's resources.

National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification organized a series of awareness and field activities in Riyadh in collaboration with Morooj Foundation to raise environmental awareness, combat desertification and preserve vegetation cover.

Under the concept 'Restore the Land. Unlock the Opportunities', the event aimed to raise awareness about land restoration, prevention, and solutions to problems related to desertification, land degradation, and drought by creating awareness among government agencies, the private sector, and civil society. As well as to strengthen and develop the participation of all sectors in the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The Scientific Information Center of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development together with the UNDP project “Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and Ecosystems of High Natural Value in the Aral Sea Basin for Multiple Benefits” is planning to hold a national workshop with participation of international experts on June 17. The workshop will be dedicated to the Desertification and Drought Day. The main topic of the seminar is the concept of updating the National Action Program to combat desertification of Turkmenistan.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment coordinated with the Provincial People's Committee in Vinh Phuc province to organize a rally under the theme "Land Restoration - Opening the Future, " attended by the representatives of the national and local government, together with the international organizations and the local public.

The workshop trained extension officers, technical officers, agriculture educators and farmers to assess climate-smart agriculture compliance using the C-SAC™ tool developed. Ahead of the event, schools around the Barbados National Park catchment took part in a fruit tree planting.

Campina Grande (PB) will host the national seminar "Restore the land. Create the opportunities" that will bring together researchers, politicians, public managers, business owners and representatives of organized civil society to discuss strategies for land restoration, sustainable development and adaptation to climate change in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Held under the FAO-led GEF project supporting UNCCD COP drought decisions, this regional consultation will bring together stakeholders to exchange knowledge on drought policy and financing. The event aims to strengthen institutional coordination, identify financing gaps and explore sustainable investment strategies to enhance drought resilience across the region.

The Republic of Colombia hosts this year’s global observance of Desertification and Drought Day, highlighting the country’s commitment to tackling land degradation through nature-based solutions. Taking place in Bogotá, the event draws global attention to the urgent need to scale up land restoration as a catalyst for sustainability, peace and inclusive development. The global observance will be part of the Global Land Forum, hosted by the Government of Colombia. 

The event will gather key actors to share insights on land restoration, climate resilience and the role of women in land governance. It includes symposia, field visits and dialogue spaces, promoting restoration efforts in Guatemala and beyond, supported by IUCN, UNCCD and other partners.

The national program will highligh the impacts of land degradation on food security and water availability. Through field visits and awareness activities, the event will promote sustainable land and water management, encourage climate adaptation and foster collaboration to build agricultural resilience

The event will highlight the actions that are being carried out in the fight against desertification, land degradation and drought, as well as the opportunities for synergies among the various institutions, organizations, academia and civil society, generating a space for dialogue, exchange of experiences and strengthening of alliances.

Join the OPTAIN Continental Regional Dialogue, focusing on combating desertification and drought by promoting Natural/Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRMs). The hybrid event brings together stakeholders across the Pannonian, Continental and Boreal regions to exchange knowledge and support the integration of NSWRMs into water and land management. A workshop on drought and water scarcity in Southern Italy brought together professors and scientists who presented their work in three scientific sessions, followed by a round table involving several stakeholder to discuss the adaptation strategies to fight drought and water scarcity.

The University of Sassari, CNR’s Institute for Bioeconomy and the MONALISA and TERRASAFE projects are hosting a webinar to showcase solutions for land restoration and foster dialogue among stakeholders. The goal is to turn knowledge into inclusive, effective action for sustainable land management.

The Society of Chemists and Physicists of Messina and AssoCEA Messina APS, with the InFEA network, will convene a high-level scientific conference to apply the MEDALUS framework to analyze climate, soil, vegetation and land-use drivers of desertification in Southern Italy—especially Sicily and Sardinia—and present integrated, data-driven strategies for prevention, mitigation and ecological restoration.

The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, in collaboration with Casa África, is organizing a conference at Casa Árabe in Madrid, providing a platform to showcase solutions to desertification and drought, with a special focus on the role of youth.

In Türkiye, 65% of the land is categorized as arid or semi-arid, leaving millions of people and diverse ecosystems struggling daily under the relentless grip of drought. The UN has officially recognized 17 June as the Desertification and Drought Day, a vital opportunity for increased public engagement and awareness. This petition is a call to action to launch a special Google  Doodle for the Day to educate the public on the vital issue of combating desertification and drought. 

The nation-wide activities dedicated to the Day include a school art competition, with winners receiving awards on 17 June, an accompanying exhibition, a Rio Protocol signing between three focal point ministries on synergies between land restoration, biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation, and a collage of video testimonials on benefits of land restoration featuring participants on the recent LDN TSP2.0 ILUP workshop in South Africa.

The session will spotlight Türkiye’s cutting-edge approaches to monitoring land degradation, desertification and soil erosion, to share expertise and knowledge and fostering partnerships. It will showcase Türkiye’s national monitoring systems, including desertification susceptibility model, ynamic erosion model and monitoring system, soil organic carbon modeling and mapping, national land cover and land use classification and monitoring system and land degradation neutrality decision support system.

A number of activities took place, including a workshop in Ugljevik led by the UNCCD science and technology correspondent Dr. Sabrija Čadro and a TV interview with the UNCCD Science-Policy Interface alumnae Dr. Marijana Kapović-Solomun, who spoke about the Convention, the Day itself and the importance of soil protection.

AFRD invites you to a community-focused event in Kakheti Region, showcasing practical Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) against land degradation. Through hands-on demonstrations of seed ball techniques, engaging youth and community members  and expert discussions, The event will highlight an accessible, scalable approach to restoring grass cover, protecting biodiversity and building local resilience against desertification.

The workshop to advance national Land Degradation Neutrality targets under the LDN TSP 2.0 initiative, aligned with this year's Desertification and Drought Day, brought together national stakeholders and UNCCD experts to review progress and refine targets to restore land and unlock sustainable land-based opportunities.

Professors and students will gather under the banner “Our Land. Our Rights. Our Lives.” Linking student action with the fight against desertification, the rally will spotlight how poor land management, intensive agriculture, industrial pollution, soil sealing, illegal landfills and mining degrade the soil, calling for the restoration of the nation’s lands.

Krosnianska 2 elementary school will mark the day by establishing an edible garden on the school grounds. The kids have been preparing the soil for two weeks and have already started planting some edible and medicinal plants to create an inspiring project that serves as an example of community-led sustainable gardening.

The Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute will lead this year's observance of the Day.

Across the IDRC/FCDO Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) research portfolio, work is underway to co-create solutions that enable drought resilience to meet the needs of the world’s most vulnerable. In honour of Desertification and Drought Day, the CLARE Programme produced an article highlighting how CLARE projects respond to the challenges of desertification and drought.

Organized with SOS Sahel under the theme “Forgotten plants to restore land and nourish the future,” the event featured children’s workshops exploring resilient Sahelian crops—such as fonio, baobab, shea and acacia—through sensory activities and games. A guided greenhouse tour showcased African plant collections, while expert discussions highlighted the role of underused crops in restoring land. Visitors sampled West African-inspired foods made with millet and fonio, discovered ethical products from the Nima Fairly initiative and enjoyed a tasting led by chef Anto Cocagne.

A webinar (in French) on support for drought management in drylands at local, national and international levels will cover the following topics: Drought impacts, crisis management and the potential of agro-ecology as a drought response in oasis systems; drought issues addressed by UNCCD and in international negotiations; Désertif'actions 2026: co-constructing common positions in a multi-stakeholder dynamic to support drought resilience.

What is the connection between demography and desertification? Are population growth, urbanization, and migration linked to land degradation in drylands? The new thematic Dossier from CSFD provides insights into this complex issue, with examples from various dryland regions across the globe.
 

The Bodenaktionstag /Land Action Day at Gesamtschule Bonns Fünfte, the first officially recognized UNCCD land-friendly school, features student presentations on school garden projects, hands-on activities about soil and land health, a symbolic tree planting and interactive stations that make learning about land restoration fun and engaging, and showcase how young people are taking action to protect and restore their native land.

Green Musketeer tells the inspiring story of Dutch inventor Pieter Hoff, whose mission to reforest two billion hectares of degraded land led to the creation of the Waterboxx® and Growboxx®—innovative tools that grow trees and vegetables in arid regions without irrigation. The film follows Hoff’s global efforts, his resilience in the face of setbacks, and his fight against illness, offering a moving portrait of visionary leadership and environmental innovation. The screening includes an introduction by his son, Wout Hoff, who now leads Groasis and continues this vital work. A post-film discussion with Wout will explore the ongoing impact of their mission. Groasis, recognized as a Dutch National Icon, exemplifies innovation with global potential and societal value.

Join  #Land4OurFuture, a two-week global social media activation mobilizing youth and women to champion land rights, restoration and drought resilience as solutions to climate change, gender inequality and sustainable development. The Day at the Arcadia Ecohome will include a keep-up cleanup and landscaping session to revive habitats, enrich soil and boost biodiversity; a meet-up discussion on land and soil conservation with Prof. N.-W. Lin of National Chung Cheng University and two invited guests; a look-up citizen-science walk to explore nature-based defences against drought-driven land degradation; and a write-up that will publish the resulting expert insights online to broaden public awareness.

The workshop brings together youth, innovators and restoration advocates to explore how soil microbiome activation can drive land restoration. Featuring the TreePampers technology with its BioBoost formula, the event includes a live demonstration, hands-on planting session and a discussion on science-driven strategies for regenerating degraded land. From carbon-based microbial stimulation to improved soil structure, we plant the future from the soil up.
