The UNCCD is proud to announce that its feature documentary The Great Green Wall, directed by Jared P. Scott, will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, 31 August 2019. Executive-produced by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles, the film follows musician and activist Inna Modja who takes viewers on an epic journey along Africa's Great Green Wall — an ambitious vision to grow an 8 000km new world wonder stretching across the entire width of the continent to restore land and provide a future for millions of people. "The Great Green Wall is a truly inspirational initiative, which is growing urgent solutions in the face of the twenty-first century’s greatest challenges," says UNCCD Executive Secretary Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw. Once complete, the Great Green Wall will be the largest living structure on the planet, three times the size of the Great Barrier Reef. By 2030, the Great Green Wall is expected to revive 100 million hectares of land, create ten million jobs in rural areas and sequester 250 million tons of carbon. Co-produced by MAKE Waves and the UNCCD, the film is supported by a host of funding partners including Building Energy, Connect4Climate-World Bank Group, the European Commission, Global Environment Facility, Irish Aid, Wallace Global Fund, SOS Sahel, Timberland, Tree Aid, Bertha Foundation and African Union. During the UNCCD COP14, joint work with other countries of Central Asia to develop measures to prevent and mitigate droughts, as well as reduce sand and dust storms will be of particular importance to Tajikistan, ASIA-Plus news agency reports.
The Fourteenth Session of the Conference of Parties (COP14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification opens on Monday afternoon, 2 September 2019, in New Delhi, India, and ends Friday, 13 September 2019.
At the UNCCD COP14 recently held in Delhi India, the Capacity Building Marketplace (CBM) featured strongly through its side-event "Talking Capacity Building and You. A chance to share and to receive!" which took place on 6th of September. The CBM team of Jairo (Colombia), Ali (Pakistan), Jorge (Spain), Lilia (Russia), Loretta (Ghana), and Paul (France) had worked -under the guidance of CBM Manager, Dr. Richard A. Byron-Cox- for weeks organizing this major event. From the planning of the exercise to the designing of materials, and the organization of a grand cocktail to close the event, were all in the hands of the Team. This was all being done working with people halfway around the world from Germany, i.e. in India. People they had never and will never meet in person as no member of the Team save the Manager attended the COP. But they made it a grand affair, as from all accounts, the event turned out magnificently!!
The Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Federal Republic of Germany Mr. Toily Atayev and the First Consulate Mr. Murad Ozbekbayev visited the UNCCD secretariat last week to meet with the UNCCD Executive Secretary Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw and the UNCCD staff.
