Civil society organizations
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Manages an information action plan for youth in the fight against desertification. Organizes summer workcamps through north-south excahnges, on tree planting, reafforestation and other activities devoted to the preservation and restoration of the nature heritage.
Advocates and supports the role of pastoral cultures and their indigenous knowledge systems in making sustainable use of arid lands. Current regional programme is focused on the Thar Desert, India. Conducts extensive research with camel pastoral groups inhabiting the extreme arid zone.
Aims to bring awareness of the environment and development issues to the German and European public through meetings and seminars.
Supports programmes to reforest degraded land. Sensitizes public to significance of firewood as a major cause of desertification
Facilitates the exchange of information and knowledge on natural and forestry environments. Promotes international cooperation on environmental, technical and social aspects particularly in the development of forestry environments. Organizes talk-shops, expositions and national and international meetings aimed at environmental and development issues.
Sets up craft development centres which provide training, raw materials, product development and marketing aimed at creating self-employment. Conducts training in plant grafting to enable the raising of anti-desertification fruit and non-fruit saplings. Assists in the purchase, storage and distribution of fodder for cattle breeding. Encourages water harvesting activities.
Conducts training courses on local sustainable development, environmental education, agricultural ecology and the protection of natural resources. Implements projects in partnership with country-based organizations in Burkina Faso, Mali and Tunisia aimed at rehabilitating the land and empowering the local community to manage their own natural resources.
Represents French NGOs in discussions with the French Government and international agencies on cooperation policies; coordinates NGO environmental awareness campaigns.
Provides legal assistance on international instruments and on land reclamation programmes in affected areas.
