Valentin Aich
Valentin Aich is seconded from the Global Water Partnership (GWP) to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), where he serves as Senior Water and Climate Specialist. He currently coordinates the Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP), contributes to the Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) — both joint programmes of WMO and GWP — and facilitates the work of the WMO Expert Team on Drought (ET-Drought). He also leads the technical development of projects on drought and flood resilience and provides technical oversight for their implementation.
Previously, he worked as Associate Scientific Officer with the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) at WMO and, before that, as Climate Change Adaptation Specialist with UNEP in Afghanistan. He has more than ten years of research experience on hydroclimatic extremes from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), where he completed his PhD on floods in the Niger Basin.
