Technology Fair - The Kubuqi Model – A private sector driving business model for eco-restoration of large-scale…
Kubuqi desert is the 7th largest desert of China with a total land area of 18 600 km2. Thirty years ago, Elion was a salt chemistry plant at the heart of the desert and was suffering the severe sand storms. Over the last decades, they developed an afforestation strategy and an ecological business plan relying on the resources of the desert. Today, more than one third of the desert is covered with vegetation and an integrated business model was established. The key elements of the model include policy support from the Government, local communities’ participation and private sectors leadership driving the process. Kubuqi became the first desert under full restoration and the Kubuqi model is a great example of good practices in restoration of large-scale degraded ecosystems.
