Accredited CSO
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Undertakes activities to involve local communities in the conservation and sustainable development of natural resources. Carries out projects for the conservation and rehabilitation of degraded areas through the plantation of native trees. Organizes activities to raise awareness on the sustainable use of natural resources and in education.
Prepares demonstration and training projects based on the experience of dryland afforestation, watershed management and reuse of treated wastewater and bio-solids. Organizes training courses annually, one on dryland agriculture and biotechnology and another on the conservation of dryland biodiversity. Is developing a project on collaboration to control natural resource degradation of arid lands in the region.
Undertakes projects in developing countries on agroforestry and combating desertification. Carries out programmes for the development of a primary sector in agriculture and forestry in developing countries. Stimulates ecotourism as a way of contributing to the sustainable development of certain areas.
Carries out activities to rehabilitate degraded areas and provide alternative livelihoods for people living there. Sets up rural credit systems to assist farmers in establishing small businesses and other alternative income generation activities. Promotes the involvement of youth and women in national environmental policies. Cooperates with the different stakeholders on the development of early warning systems for droughts and floods.
Organizes tree seed nurseries in remote rural areas and market gardening. Develops fruit tree plantation campaigns. Executes awareness campaigns among small farmers to combat overgrazing. Organizes local communities in the production of manure as a fertilizer.
Assists in the promotion of livestock farming and in the mechanization of peasant agriculture. Promotes sustainable farming methods and control of deforestation. Manages a tree crop nursery. Seeks technological support to implement sustainable development practices in the local communities. Educates local communities in intensifying the effort to protect community forest and promote eco-tourism.
Carries out research and analyses activities on tropical forests, the wood industry and forestry. Promotes the protection of fragile forestry ecosystems and the development of forestry legislation. Fulfils activities aiming at social and environmental development e.g. eco-tourism, promotion of renewable energy and promotion of alternative activities to conserve forestry resources.
Organizes awareness and information days and undertakes alphabetization programmes for women living in rural areas and seminars for training young people, women and farmers. Implements activities aimed at assisting the most vulnerable sector of society, i.e. children and young mothers, through education on environmental matters and the conservation of natural resources.
Publishes books on sustainable development in South Africa and is organising upcoming conference on Agenda 21 with a specific focus on drought and desertification.

SCI drives change through advocacy, capacity strengthening, and research. SCI partners with world leaders and global communities disproportionately affected by economic inequity and climate change to drive policy change and improve best practices that advances technology and increases access to solar cooking. With collaborators in over 135 countries, SCI has contributed to efforts that have made nearly 8 billion solar-cooked meals possible, addressing critical global challenges.
