The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.

Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.

Conservation Efforts for Community Development

Promotes watershed management and soil and water conservation practices. Carries out tree planting campaigns and promotes the establishment of farm tree nursery beds. Promotes incomegenerating activities that contribute towards the alleviation of rural poverty. Builds grass-roots_x000D_ capacity of rural communities to effectively participate and be fully involved in activities that affect their livelihoods. Organizes training in soil and water conservation, sustainable agriculture and sustainable community development. Coordinates participatory training sessions with trainers in agricultural extension. Prepares and disseminates material on environmental issues through the mass media. Issues a quarterly environmental protection bulletin called Biosynopsis. Publishes books and brochures on environmental protection for children and adults. Implements soil, water and biodiversity projects in three pilot villages. Undertakes research projects on water and soil quality so as to meet the needs of the rural population.

Association Oasis Ferkla pour l’Environnement et le Patrimoine

Organizes awareness-raising campaigns on water management and the effects of desertification and drought. Manages the oasis ecosystem through awareness raising, protection of green areas, reduction of garbage and strengthening of local associations. Undertakes activities to involve local communities in the conservation and sustainable development of natural resources. Carries out projects for the conservation and rehabilitation of degraded areas through the plantation of native trees. Organizes activities to raise awareness on the sustainable use of natural resources and in education.

Blaustein Institute for Desert Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Prepares demonstration and training projects based on the experience of dryland afforestation, watershed management and reuse of treated wastewater and bio-solids. Organizes training courses annually, one on dryland agriculture and biotechnology and another on the conservation of dryland biodiversity. Is developing a project on collaboration to control natural resource degradation of arid lands in the region.

Carries out activities to rehabilitate degraded areas and provide alternative livelihoods for people living there. Sets up rural credit systems to assist farmers in establishing small businesses and other alternative income generation activities.
