Accredited CSO
The UNCCD COP recognizes that the involvement and participation of the civil society is vital to the successful implementation of this Convention. It therefore welcomes the contribution of CSOs, with particular regard to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to the official meetings of the UNCCD.
Representatives from CSOs that are accredited to the COP may directly participate in the UNCCD secretariat’s sessions. At these sessions CSOs are consulted on United Nation’s policy and programme matters. They also play key roles at major United Nations conferences as indispensable partners for efforts at the country level. Below are the current accredited CSO's to the Convention.
Formulates studies of the biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics of drylands in order to identify environmental benchmarks and indicators. Participates in the preparation, evaluation and monitoring of the national action programme. Organizes regional and local workshops on UNCCDrelated issues. Promotes the transfer of technology in sustainable production so as to ensure food security. Carries out consultancies on the use of organic fertilizers and the establishment, management and use of forests and reforestation.
Organizes discussion panels on environmental issues such as water supply, land degradation and desertification. Collaborates with the governmental focal point in the implementation of the National Action Programme. Disseminates information on United Nations programmes and_x000D_ activities to the local population and other civil organizations.
Organizes awareness-raising campaigns on water management and the effects of desertification and drought. Manages the oasis ecosystem through awareness raising, protection of green areas, reduction of garbage and strengthening of local associations. Stimulates ecotourism in the area._x000D_ Organises forums and scientific seminars on environmental problems. Promotes traditional irrigation systems. Encourages the exchange of information between associations, business, local authorities and local organizations working in the same area.
Organizes training in soil and water conservation, sustainable agriculture and sustainable community development. Coordinates participatory training sessions with trainers in agricultural extension. Prepares and disseminates material on environmental issues through the mass media. Issues a quarterly environmental protection bulletin called Biosynopsis. Publishes books and brochures on environmental protection for children and adults. Implements soil, water and biodiversity projects in three pilot villages. Undertakes research projects on water and soil quality so as to meet the needs of the rural population.
Promotes watershed management and soil and water conservation practices. Carries out tree planting campaigns and promotes the establishment of farm tree nursery beds. Promotes incomegenerating activities that contribute towards the alleviation of rural poverty. Builds grass-roots_x000D_ capacity of rural communities to effectively participate and be fully involved in activities that affect their livelihoods. Capacity-building for the benefit of individual farmers in the use of appropriate technology.
Promotes and undertakes initiatives to implement the three Rio conventions (CBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD). Proposes initiatives to strengthen public awareness in order to fulfil the aims of the conventions. Supports the establishment in other countries of organizations with similar aims._x000D_ Manages a website that offers non-governmental organizations the possibility of launching appeals to support environmental issues related to the three conventions. Facilitates the exchange of information among organizations involved in the implementation of the conventions.
Organizes vocational training for women in different trades. Assists in the formation of women’s self-help groups. Facilitates their operations and imparts training to farmers on advanced methods of farming and cultivation, and on the management of irrigation channels and drainage systems._x000D_ Promotes solar lights and cookers and biogas. Implements programmes for agricultural development and the management of human and natural resources. Implements a Food for Work_x000D_ Programme of the WFP.
Monitors a database on the degradation of local ecosystems. Prepares studies and research on the_x000D_ degradation of agricultural land on the Cataractes Plateau and in the Niari Valley. Facilitates cooperation between the population and scientists on environmental and sustainable development issues. Has developed a cartographic map of the deterioration of forests on the plateau.
Participates in a bilateral project implementing a participatory technology development process for integrated farming on drylands. Works at the grass-roots level implementing anti-desertification activities. Assists local farmers, self-help groups and women with micro credit. Promotes voluntary efforts in rural development through the building up of local institutions and training of workers. Undertakes land development programmes such as afforestation and soil and water management.
Cooperates with organizations and institutions concerned with sustainable development and desertification control and monitoring. Conducts studies on the development of the agricultural sector and the use of agricultural resources in a scientific way which causes no desertification. Organizes conferences, seminars and training courses for farmers and agricultural engineers in the field of desertification monitoring and rehabilitation of the areas affected by desertification.
