Data for #ClimateAction
The OECD repository of international data and indicators on the environmental, economic, financial and social dimensions of climate change provides essential information for effective climate policies. Navigate the data, explore emissions by country and by sector, and countries’ energy mix, and learn more about country policies including carbon pricing, fossil fuel subsidies and investment in renewable energy.
Achieving net-zero emissions requires rapid economic, social and technological transformations. Many countries are taking action, but progress is insufficient to achieve the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement and keep the global average temperature increase well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
Renewable energy is increasingly used, but still accounts for only 11% of energy supply and 27% of electricity production in the OECD. This is not enough to effectively reduce GHG emissions from energy use.
International trade and global value chains play an important role in carbon emissions. The carbon footprint of OECD countries is generally higher than domestic emissions. About 18% of emissions associated with domestic final demand in OECD countries stem from foreign sources.
How does your country compare?
Many governments support the production and consumption of fossil fuels. In 2019, this support amounted to USD 468 billion, across 81 economies. Several countries provide fossil fuel support as part of their Covid-19 recovery packages.
