Ahmed Ali Abdelati Ahmed
Dr. Ahmed Abdelati Ahmed is Professor of Agronomy and Head of the Plant Production Department of Ecology and Dry Lands Agriculture at the Desert Research Center in Egypt. He was nominated by Egypt to serve as the principal Science and Technology Correspondent (STC) for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). He also chairs the Scientific Committee in Egypt and the Arab Team, monitoring the implementation of the UNCCD and the CBD for Egypt and the League of Arab States.
He was appointed Egyptian National Consultant to the UNCCD Inter-Working Group on Drought and serves as Focal Point of the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) as Co-Chair of the Taskforce for Sustainability. Since joining the Desert Research Center in 1989 he has worked on sustainable development of desert research in Egypt, contributed to national and international projects and supervised MSc and PhD students in agronomy. Since 2003 he has been engaged in the implementation of the UNCCD in Egypt, beginning as member and rapporteur of the national Scientific Committee.
From 2008 to 2013 he was seconded to the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency of the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs as consultant for land and afforestation. At UNCCD COP15 in Abidjan he was elected Vice Chair and Rapporteur of the Bureau of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) representing the Africa Group for the triennium 2022–2024 and was entrusted to facilitate the COP15 working group on other matters for the Committee of the Whole (COW). Ahmed holds MSc and PhD degrees in Agronomy from Ain Shams University, Cairo.
