Chay Asdak

Prof. Chay Asdak is a leading Indonesian expert in watershed hydrology, environmental management and sustainable development. With a career spanning over four decades at Padjadjaran University, he currently serves as Head of the Department of Agricultural Technology and Biosystem, and is a member of the University Senate. Prof. Asdak holds a Ph.D. in Forest/Catchment Hydrology from the University of Edinburgh, an M.Sc. in Forest Hydrology from the University of Minnesota and a B.Sc. in Forest Economics from Gadjah Mada University.

He has made significant contributions to environmental science and policy in Indonesia, notably through his leadership in watershed and landscape management, strategic environmental assessments (SEA) and integrated water resource conservation. He has served in numerous national roles, including as Acting Coordinator of the National Watershed Management Forum under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and as an Expert Panel member on National Flood Mitigation for Bappenas. 

Prof. Asdak has authored and co-edited several influential books, including Hydrology and the Management of Watershed, Strategic Environmental Assessment: A Road to Sustainable Development, and Menuju Indonesia Emas. His academic contributions are widely recognized, with dozens of peer-reviewed publications addressing issues such as flood risk, climate mitigation and sustainable land and water governance.

With a strong foundation in both research and applied consultancy, Prof. Asdak has led or contributed to over 30 high-impact environmental projects across Indonesia, supporting national and international institutions such as the World Bank and WWF. He is also the Chief Editor of Jurnal Teknotan, further reinforcing his leadership in environmental knowledge dissemination.
