Fashion shapes more than trends. It shapes the land beneath our feet.
Fashion is one of the world's largest industries, yet its connection to land often remains overlooked. The fibers that make our clothes come from landscapes across the world, and the choices made throughout the fashion value chain have far-reaching impacts on soil health, water resources, biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions of people.
From cotton cultivation and cashmere grazing to wood-based fibers and synthetic textiles, every material leaves a footprint on land. As demand for fashion grows, so too does the pressure on the ecosystems that sustain us. Yet the impact does not end at production: the vast majority of clothing ultimately becomes waste rather than remaining in circulation. Of all the fibre used for clothing, 87 per cent is landfilled or incinerated.
Healthy land is the foundation of resilient economies, thriving communities and sustainable production systems. It provides the natural resources needed to produce food, feed and fibre, supports biodiversity and helps combat climate change. Protecting land means protecting the future of fashion itself.
That's why the UNCCD launched #Fashion4Land, a global initiative that engages stakeholders across the fashion ecosystem to highlight the connection between fashion and land. Through awareness-raising, partnerships and cross-sector collaboration, Fashion4Land promotes sustainable fibre systems and supports efforts toward more resilient, land-friendly value chains.
Building on the momentum of the Fashion and Land publication and the landmark Fashion4Land launch at UNCCD COP16, the campaign shines a spotlight on solutions that support sustainable land stewardship while helping create a more resilient, transparent and circular fashion industry.

- Launch of the campaign at UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
- UNCCD's participation in the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion Steering Committee, advancing collaboration across the UN system and fashion sector
- Sustainable Fashion Awards 2025 (Milan Fashion Week): UNCCD participated as a member of the international jury, helping recognize excellence in climate action, biodiversity conservation, circularity and social impact across the fashion industry.
- Fashion4Land Forum at UNCCD COP17, bringing together leaders from across the fashion ecosystem to accelerate action for land-friendly fashion
