The UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework reaches its midpoint in 2024. With the aim to consider the progress made so far and potential next steps, the UNCCD Conference of the Parties (COP) launched in 2022 a midterm evaluation process. This document provides substantive background information for that process, including on:

• The content of the Strategic Framework and the tools that are used to monitor progress under the UNCCD
• The evaluation criteria and approaches to collecting and analyzing information
• The work to be carried out in preparation for the midterm evaluation
• Other UNCCD processes that are interlinked with the midterm evaluation

The work to be carried out in preparation for the midterm evaluation is also considered in this document. The components set by the COP - an independent assessment, an intergovernmental working group, and a report to the COP - are presented, together with information of how each could be conducted.
