Work experience
Dr. Kaarakka has 12 years of research and teaching experience in tropical dryland forestry. His doctoral dissertation dealt with rehabilittion of dryland vegetation, with particular reference to rainwater harvesting in Eastern Kenya. His M.Sc. thesis investigated ecophysiology and growth of eucalyptus in Thailand in 1984. From 1985 to 1988 he worked as an assistant research officer at the Dept. of Silviculture, Univ. of Helsinki. He undertook lecturing, tutoring and technical reporting for the Bura Fuelwood Project in Kenya (funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland). In 1988 he was appointed as resident research officer in the same project in Bura, Kenya. The research, which was undertaken jointly with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute, covered irrigated and rainfed fuelwood plantations, indigenous dryland forests and the forestry-related needs and expectations of the local people.
