Tuesday, 3 Dec 2024, 14:00 - 16:30
Impacts of land degradation and drought on forced migration, security and prosperity
The ministerial dialogue will examine how sustainable land management (SLM) and drought resilience can address the interconnected challenges of land degradation, forced migration, and conflict. With 3.2 billion people globally affected by land degradation and over 120 million forcibly displaced, these issues undermine stability, security and livelihoods.
Key focus areas include:
- Conflict prevention: Integrating SLM and drought resilience into peace-building strategies to address root causes of disputes and forced migration
- Regional and cross-border cooperation: Promoting partnerships to rehabilitate ecosystems and strengthen resilience in fragile regions
- Nature-positive solutions: Utilizing sustainable practices to mitigate desertification, reduce displacement and foster social cohesion
The dialogue will explore:
- Approaches to stability and peace: Effective strategies within regional partnerships to tackle the root causes of conflict and migration
- Collaborative opportunities: Ways governments and international partners can integrate SLM and drought resilience to prevent conflict and enhance regional stability
This dialogue provides a platform for ministers and stakeholders to align on strategies that link sustainable land practices with peace and security, driving progress toward global stability and prosperity.
