UNCCD national reporting process

The national reporting process is a vital tool for the implementation of the Convention, supporting the achievement of strategic objectives at both global and national levels. The data submitted by Parties also informs the actions of other stakeholders who contribute to the UNCCD implementation.
In accordance with Article 26 and the decisions of its Conference of the Parties (COP), particularly Decision 11/COP.1, Parties to the UNCCD are required to submit their reports on actions taken to implement the Convention through the UNCCD secretariat. The Performance Review and Assessment of Implementation System (PRAIS), used to streamline this process, is undergoing an upgrade ahead of the 2026 reporting cycle. It is expected to be ready by summer 2025, allowing Parties sufficient time to complete and submit their national reports. The tentative deadlines are:
- November 2026 for national reports on Strategic Objective 1
- February 2027 for the remaining Strategic Objectives
The 2022 version of PRAIS 4 remains accessible but cannot be used for 2026 submissions. We appreciate your patience as we update PRAIS 4 and related documentation.
National reporting has significantly evolved over the past two decades. Since 2018, the process has focused on tracking progress in implementing the UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework, adopted at COP 13 (Decision 7/COP.13). National reporting now includes:
- Data on progress toward the five strategic objectives, covering ecosystems affected by land degradation, populations affected, drought hazard, exposure and vulnerability, global environmental benefits, and resource mobilization
- Data on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 15.3.1 “proportion of land that is degraded over total land area”, as a contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- The Implementation Framework, which defines the roles and responsibilities of Parties and Convention institutions in meeting these objectives. For Parties, it focuses on three key areas:
- Financial and non-financial resources
- Policy and planning
- Actions on the ground
To date, two rounds of reporting have been completed (2018 and 2022), following a four-year reporting frequency established by Decision 15/COP.13. During the first cycle, Parties submitted data for the baseline period 2000–2015, while in 2022, they reported on trends in land degradation, drought and other key indicators.
These inputs are compiled using the UNCCD Data Dashboard, which enables visitors to explore current trends in land degradation and drought, as well as the progress made by countries in addressing them, through data submitted by UNCCD Parties.
