The private sector is an important stakeholder in a sustainably managed world. By 2050, the world's population will have increased to over 9 billion, with twice the current demand for agricultural products. By 2030, 80% of the global population is expected to become consumers.

Providing for this growing class of consumers is an exciting challenge. However, with unsustainable land practices reducing essential soil nutrients, we are undermining our own future business potential.

Launched at UNCCD COP15 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Business for Land Initiative aims at bringing visibility to the commitments made by participating companies towards land degradation neutrality, both in supply chains and CSR activities.

The Changwon Initiative Business Action Programme on Land will act as a platform to bring together business sector partners from all around the world that have a keen interest in supporting and implementing land degradation neutrality measures. These measures include the coordination of actions to:

  1. Avoid degradation of healthy land,
  2. Reduce the level of land degradation through sustainable management practises
  3. Restore or rehabilitate degraded land.

The programme comprises two parts:

Business for Land Pledge/Commitment

The establishment of a pledge programme where businesses can pledge support for land degradation neutrality and activities that Avoid, Reduce or Restore.

Business for Land Action Projects/Partnership

Connecting the support provided by the business sector for LDN action projects/partnerships

The programme aims to facilitate business sector engagement in the implementation of the Convention and LDN, through strategic partnerships and networking among interested stakeholders including local communities working on the ground. It will provide opportunities for peer learning and information exchange on innovative and sustainable solutions for combating DLDD, as well as sustainable business models for enterprises contributing to achieving LDN.

Moving forward, it is envisaged that consolidated commitments and pledges through this programme could leverage greater engagement of the business sector in LDN, accelerating a major shift from business-as-usual to innovative approaches supporting sustainable land management.
